What is The Strangers' Choir?

The Strangers' Choir is a pop up choir that has been in existence since March 2025, modestly confined to Goa for a few months, after which it has traveled around India twice, turning almost 2000 complete strangers into one choir or another. It was founded and is facilitated by Medha Sahi, a singer and music educator with almost two decades of experience.

The concept is simple, you come, you learn how to choir, you sing a song as a choir and you leave, changed (hopefully) for the better. It is open to all people over the age of 13, no matter their singing experience or lack thereof.  There are no auditions and people find out their informal voice parts after arriving. Every vocal texture, every level of training and every person is welcome. That diversity is what makes it sound so goosebump-inducing!

We're gearing up to start Season 3 at the end of February and will travel to 14 cities across three months, phew! If you are someone who likes to sing, we hope to find you in one of the many sessions. Registrations open on February 10th, 2026. Happy singing!

About the founder - Medha Sahi

Having been trained in Hindustani classical music since the age of 6, Medha found herself drawn to western music when she was introduced to musical theater in the 8th grade (Joseph and his Technicolor Coat/ "Pharoah") then went on to Vassar College (New York, USA) to study classical jazz voice which was major influence in my life. While at Vassar, she was a part of the Jazz Ensemble, a forty piece big band that performed at jazz clubs like The Falcon and at Skinner Hall.

Since graduating, she has been teaching theater and Western Vocals, at Dr. Pillai's Global Academy (DPGA) and True School of Music respectively, to children and adolescents. At DPGA she had the honor of directing their annual production of 'The Wizard of Oz' on a grand scale that included every single student from grades 1 to 10.

Shortly after, she played Madame de la Grande Bouche in Disney's first official Broadway production in India, 'Beauty and the Beast', gaining experience in musical theater and operatic voice. Since then, she has been teaching a mix of hindustani and western music with her focus being on choral voice and musical theater.

She has done some fulfilling work via The Sound Space, with underprivileged children, young cancer patients and the elderly, as well as children in private schools whose ages range from 3 to 15. She has conducted songwriting camps for grades 8 and up and led school and extracurricular bands in music showcases. The ability to play guitar and piano as accompaniments has certainly aided her journey as a music educator. She is also a professional singer and songwriter with many advertisements and songs to her name. Most recently, she has founded a one-day choir called The Strangers' Choir that tours around the country turning unsuspecting individuals into full blown choirs. Over two thousand people across the country have been a part of one choir or another, coming together in laughter and song. It has been her most successful, and most meaningful, endeavour.
